What is Acne?
Acne is one of the most widespread skin ailments in the U.S., impacting about 60 million people each year. While many cases are considered mild and may be controlled with medication and a consistent at-home cleansing program, many people have bad enough acne that scarring occurs. Acne includes whiteheads, pimples, blackheads, and small cysts. In addition, patients can also suffer from redness, itchiness, or swelling on or around the affected skin. Caused by a combination of dead skin cells, bacteria, and clogged pores, acne is most frequently seen in teens but can also affect adults as old as 40 years of age. Acne most commonly shows up on the face, neck, chest, and back. To regain a healthier, more luminous look, seasoned dermatologist Dr. Mary Pentel at Southside Dermatology & Laser Cosmetic Center in Jacksonville, FL can provide numerous treatment options, which range from personalized at-home cleaning methods to chemical peels and laser therapy.
Acne Treatment Reviews
"I've loved coming to Southside Derm for the past 2 years for acne, and my skin is now so clear! My sister has also come here for acne as well and she has had a great experience. Debbie Smith and her MAs are so personable and the setting is immaculate. There is a dermatology side which is very clean and efficient and the spa side is relaxing and beautiful."- B.B. / Yelp / Jun 13, 2017
"I have had acne my entire life. Dr Pentel and her team at Southside dermatology helped me completely clear up my acne. They make an effort to always remember your name and take care of you like family. They truly do what is best for you. I wouldn’t go to any other dermatologist in Jacksonville."- E.G. / Google / May 18, 2019
"I had my annual cancer skin screening with Kalie. My wait time was relatively short and the screening was brief and thorough. Kalie is very professional and you'll feel at ease immediately. I had a suspicious mole removed and this was done quickly and expertly. I also have pretty severe jawline acne and requested (and was given) a prescription for Retin-A, which has worked wonderfully for me in the past. You can take your prescription right over to the spa side (which is lovely) but there is no pressure to buy the prescription from them, but it IS nice to have it right there. I was overall very pleased with my visit and will return as the need arises."- E.B. / Google / May 09, 2016
"I initially saw Dr. Pentel for what we think was a spider bite. It had become necrotic in just a day or two and I was understandably freaked out. Dr. Pentel was very reassuring, and prescribed what was necessary to take care of it, and provided thorough instructions on wound care so it would heal properly. I did as instructed, and it healed completely without any complications. I've also seen Dr. Pentel for an adult acne flare-up, and to have a few suspicious leisions looked at. It's novel that when she does any biopsies, she also keeps an eye on the aesthetic side of things. Both Dr. Pentel and her staff were always helpful, professional, and pleasant. The wait time is sometimes a little longer than I would like, but in what medical office doesn't that happen? I can also say that Dr. Pentel has also done a lot of skin cancer care on my mom, and the care is excellent and any scarring is minimal."- C.M. / Google / May 09, 2013

What Causes acne?
Acne flare-ups occur for a number of different reasons, such as hormonal changes related to puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause. Also, certain drugs and medications (such as the birth control pill) can lead to acne, as can anxiety or an unhealthy diet. Once we identify the specific cause of acne, we can establish a proper treatment program.
Symptoms of acne
Acne symptoms vary depending on the kind of acne you have and how severe it is. Blemishes are a common, obvious symptom of acne and come in many forms, such as whiteheads, cysts, pustules, papules, nodules, and blackheads. Every type of blemish ranges from moderate to severe and must be treated accordingly. Studies have shown that acne can also create psychological symptoms like lowered self-esteem. Other symptoms related to acne are dark areas on the skin and permanent scars.
treatment options for acne
For milder cases of acne, we may recommend prescription creams or cleansers that contain sulfur, retinoids, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Additionally, there are effective oral antibiotics, such as minocycline, doxycycline, and tetracycline.
Research indicates that store-bought drugs do not treat acne efficiently. Southside Dermatology & Laser Cosmetic Center offers many therapy options to control and maintain acne and clear up its symptoms. Many of these treatments can not only aid in easing acne but can also reduce the appearance of acne scars. Options include:
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
