What is skin cancer?
Skin cancer can be an intimidating word, but for patients who have been diagnosed with skin cancer, there are several treatment options available. At Southside Dermatology & Laser Cosmetic Center, we offer Mohs surgery and superficial radiation therapy (SRT) for safe, effective treatment of various skin cancers. In addition, we also perform destruction or ablation of benign tumors and use intense-pulse light therapy (IPL) to help restore the skin's appearance after the removal of benign or malignant lesions. There are several types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. For this reason, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Pentel will conduct a full skin analysis to create the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
Skin Cancer Treatment Reviews
"I’ve been going to Dr. Pentel for over ten years. She discovered I had melanoma twice and removed it all. I now go annually to get my skin check and Dr. Pentel and her staff are always kind and professional. If you want a Dermatologist that knows what skin cancer looks like...she is your doctor. ??"- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Mar 20, 2019
"Dr Pentel & her staff have always been very caring while addressing all of my medical needs. Ted, Chloe and Willette take the time to explain things to me, and patiently answer my many questions. I highly recommend Southside Dermatology to anyone who needs excellent skin care and skin cancer screening."- M.O. / Yelp / Jun 18, 2020
"Dr Sosa is the best. She listens intently and gives you alternatives for care. I have had several skin cancers from growing up in Miami and being a redhead. I can usually spot cancer and like to skip over steps when I'm sure and just do a biopsy. She will agree to this. She is great at identifying precancerous spots that i tend to overlook. I highly recommend her."- V.A. / Google / Aug 22, 2020
"I have had MANY skin cancers diagnosed at Southside Dermatiology. They are now able to use radiation therapy on certain skin cancers, which is far better for someone like me on blood thinners. I highly recommend their skilled staff with their diagnoses and procedures they perform."- C.B. / Google / Aug 22, 2020
"I have been coming to Southside Dermatology for 20 years. They are professional but fun and thorough! Being a lifelong resident of Florida the sun has done its damage but Dr. Pentel and her staff have brought me through skin cancer and taught me the right way to enjoy our Florida sun... I highly recommend them for your family..."- E.A. / Google / Oct 14, 2020
Candidates for skin cancer treatment
People who have been recently diagnosed with dermal cancer or suspect abnormal changes in their skin are usually ideal candidates for skin cancer treatment. The first step in receiving the personalized care you need is to set up a comprehensive skin assessment with Dr. Pentel. During this exam, she can review your medical history and determine the best method for removing cancerous skin tissue. In addition, she can also examine other areas and skin lesions on your body to make sure there isn't any other cause for concern.
Treatment options for skin cancer
Skin cancer treatment is a highly customized process. Solutions may include but are not limited to Mohs surgery, superficial radiation therapy (SRT), or destruction via electrocautery or cryotherapy. Dr. Pentel also often couples intense-pulse light therapy (IPL) with skin cancer treatment to rejuvenate the skin's appearance after benign, premalignant, or malignant tissue has been removed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Pentel can review the benefits and limitations of each procedure and recommend which therapy she thinks is best for you.
SUPERFICIAL RADIATION THERAPY
One of the newest innovations for non-melanoma skin cancer treatment is superficial radiation therapy (SRT). Our team at Southside Dermatology & Laser Cosmetic Center is thrilled to feature the SRT-100 Vision™. This device uses low-level x-ray energy to target and destroy non-melanoma skin cancer cells. It can also be used for keloids. This device has many benefits. It is able to target cancer cells with more accuracy, and the intensity of the waves can be modified based on your treatment progress over time. The SRT-100 Vision has a proven track record of effectiveness.
Since skin cancer treatment is so specialized, the recovery, post-care instructions, and physical limitations will be different for each person. Regardless of the care you receive, Dr. Pentel will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing and ensure optimal outcomes. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, do not hesitate to call our office. Our caring dermatological team is here to provide you with unparalleled service at every step on your road to recovery.
