What is Hair restoration?
A person's hair is often a great source of beauty, self-identity, and confidence. So whenever someone begins losing their hair, it's often very unnerving. For both women and men, baldness is something that can be tough to accept. Fortunately, with new advances in hair restoration, your hair loss can be controlled, reversed, and oftentimes, restored. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Pentel has successfully treated patients with early hair loss to late-stage balding by supplying customized patient-specific treatments, thus providing the finest, most aesthetically pleasing results. If you've noticed extra hair on your brush or small bald spots, reach out to Southside Dermatology & Laser Cosmetic Center in Jacksonville, FL to learn about all of your treatment options.
What causes Hair Loss?
The usual term for hair loss is alopecia, and it happens when the hair growth stages are interrupted. Some hair loss conditions will not last, while others are permanent. For some people, their hair loss occurs because of androgenetic alopecia (female and male pattern baldness) and is caused by three factors — genetics, androgens (male hormones), and age. Genetic baldness can come from both sides of your family and can skip a generation. Hereditary hair loss is extremely common, affecting about 50 million men and 30 million women in this country alone.
Other conditions that may disrupt hair development cycles or even destroy hair follicles include specific medical and scalp issues, nutritional deficiencies, medications, hormonal imbalance, physical injury, and even hair-care practices and fashions. Once baldness begins, it's usually a slow, gradual process that can occur in specific locations on the scalp or all over.
Types of Hair Loss Conditions
Many hair-loss conditions are treatable simply by addressing the symptoms with nonsurgical techniques to stabilize hair loss, enhance the quality of hair follicles, and stimulate new growth. Other disorders cannot be treated without surgery because of the degree and permanence of the hair loss. In such scenarios, hair transplant surgery might be considered. Common hair loss disorders are:
- Male and Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)
- Alopecia Areata
- Telogen Effluvium
- Anagen Effluvium
- Traction Alopecia
